Volunteer Program photoTrained volunteers are the heart of the HHS. Many are needed to handle the tremendous amount of work involved serving the animals and residents of our community. Every volunteer is interviewed, attends orientation and participates in training sessions. Each decides how he or she would most like to donate time and makes a commitment to a schedule. Many volunteers work outside the shelter on special projects or fund raisers. Others work in the shelter directly with the animals or on facility maintenance projects.

If you wish to work directly with the animals or to help with other shelter functions at the shelter - playing, walking, petting, filing, creating flyers, visiting schools -the choices are endless!

Foster Families Needed for Shelter Animals

We desperately need volunteers who will foster kittens/cats and puppies/dogs in their homes.

Kittens:  Fostering would involve hand-feeding kittens too young to eat and drink completely on their own. Foster families would also help kittens to develop self-grooming skills and habits.  These activities also help kittens to bond well with people.

Cats: Some adult cats need a temporary home environment to improve their physical and emotional health.  Many need to recover from upper respiratory illness in a nurturing environment.  Others are simply shy, or crave attention.  Through fostering, they become familiar with the type of love and human companionship they will have once they're adopted.

Puppies and Dogs:  Foster families would provide a caring home where our dogs could recover from "kennel cough."  The individual loving attention of a foster family, plus the quiet environment of a private home, are the best medicines for our canine friends who aren't feeling well.

If you'd like to help with these life-saving activities, please sign up for our next orientation.  The next available class will be on Saturday, May 17th from 10am to 11am.  You are encouraged to stop by the shelter and fill out an application or download one: HHS Volunteer Application.   Please call 757-208-0382 to sign up, or to receive more information.  Please be sure to leave your name and phone number.

Thank You!
