Surrendering Your Pet

Our goal at HHS is to help pets find a forever home and to remain in those homes with the families they love. Pets are often surrendered for behavior problems, financial issues or because the owner is moving to a place that doesn't allow pets. We believe that these circumstances can be solved and surrendering you pet should be a last resort.

There is no set number of days your pet can stay at our shelter. However, living at a shelter long-term is not a humane way to treat any pet. Since pet overpopulation is such a problem and HHS cannot place every single pet or stray that is brought in, your pet may be humanely euthanized.

Please contact HHS ahead of time to set an appointment to surrender your pet. We do not accept surrenders on weekends.

Surrender Process

1. Bring your pet's complete vet records, including proof of rabies, as well as any medications
they may need.

2. Describe the animal's behavior with the adoption counselor. This includes what the animal likes, dislikes, temperament and other personality traits.

3. Bathe and groom the pet before they arrive.

4. Bring some of their favorite belongings, such as toys, blankets, beds, carrier, litter box and other items.

Fees

• $25 per animal surrendered
• Additional $20 if no proof of rabies
• $40 for litters of kittens/puppies

Euthanasia

The HHS does not euthanize owned animals. If your pet needs to be put to sleep, please contact your veterinarian. If you do not have a veterinarian, please refer to the phonebook or contact the HHS and we can offer a list of veterinarians in the area.
